We now journey on to the ancient sub continent of India as we learn about this rich, deep culture and the impact this ancient society has had on the many civilizations that have followed. This unit will take approximately 3-4 weeks to complete and unfortunately will include a week long off from school during spring break. This unit will be broken into four specific parts:
Important dates for this unit:
13 March 2015 - Pretest
30 March 2015 -
05 April 2015 SPRING BREAK
10 April 2015 - Vocabulary Test
24 April 2014 - Unit Test
Section 1 "The Indus and Ganges River
Valleys"
Section 2 "Hinduism in Ancient India"
Section 3 "The Beginnings of Buddhism"
Section 4 "The Maurya Empire"
"You must be the change you want to see in the world"
Mohandas Gandhi
One of the primary concepts we will be studying during this unit will be the Hindu concept of ahimsa which is the Hindu idea of non-violence which had a huge influence to both the United States and other countries such as South Africa. Martin Luther King Jr and Nelson Mandela both practiced this concept that Mohandas Gandhi practiced with such success in liberating India from the British Empire. I intend at the end of the unit to play for the students the 1982 film "Gandhi" which details this struggle and Gandhi's ultimate success.
