Last week we discussed the many different way the land forms change on the surface due to weathering, erosion, deposition and even how people can change land forms to fit their needs. This week we study about the internal ways in which the the Earth causes land forms to be created and destroyed.
Objectives
- Identify the layers of the Earth
- List the characteristics of the layers of the Earth
- Identify the atmosphere in which human beings live
- Explain the theory of Pangaea and how the continents are
believed to have all been one continent many many years
ago
- Explain the theory of Continental Drift
- Explain the theory of Plate Tectonics
- Explain how natural disasters help shape the Earth
- Describe and locate the Ring of Fire
Vocabulary
atmosphere
Thick layers of gases or air. The Earth’s atmospheres act like a blanket. It holds in heat from the sun which makes life on earth possible. There are many different layers to our atmosphere but we will only concentrate on the troposphere or the layer of the atmosphere where human beings live.
plate tectonics
This try states that Earth's crust is made of huge blocks called plates that move very slowly and help contribute to shaping land forms by causing earthquakes and volcanoes.
Ring of Fire
The Ring of Fire is an area where a large number of earthquakes and volcano eruptions occur. The Ring of Fire is located in the Pacific Ocean.
Theory of Pangaea
This is part of plate tectonic theory and describes the current scientific believe that in Earth's early history all the continents were connected to form one large continent.
Classroom and Homework schedule for 14 - 18 October 2013
Mon - No warm up. Show students the
power point presentation on
"Layers and Atmospheres of the
Earth"
Watch short film on the Layers of the
Earth
Watch video rap song on Layers of
the Earth
Distribute "Layers of the Earth"
diagram to students this worksheet is
to be completed as homework
Homework
Students will label the diagram given
to them in class and write on the back
the characteristics of each layer of
the Earth.
Tues - Warm up: Describe the Theory of
Plate Tectonics
Collect Layers of the Earth diagram
Show short film on Theory of Plate
Tectonics
Break into groups
Homework
Students will log on to the Brain Pop
web site located at
brainpop.com
user: npacademy
psswd: panama
Students will use the search spot to
look for the movies entitled "Earth's
Structure" and "Plate Tectonics".
View the films and take the
associated quizzes.
Students will send the results to me using the email capability to
[email protected]
Students must pass with a 70% or
better on all Brainpop and Discovery
Education assignments and will have
three attempts in order to do this.
After the third attempt I will record
the highest score they received.
Weds -Warm up: What layer of the Earth
do we live on.
Provide both the layer of the Earth and the atmospheric layer we live
on.
Show short film and video song on
Earth's atmospheres
No homework
Thurs -Warm up: Describe the Theory of
Pangaea.
Break into groups
No homework
Fri - No warm up. Students will be
taking the Unit 2 Terrain Types/
Shaping the Earth
No homework
Book Group
Students will read in the Earth Science book Chapter 5 pages 128-131, pages 134-140 and again pages 141-147. Once this is read the students will answer the following questions.
