World History Week 2 Lesson Plan
(Earth's Grid System)
Week 2 August 25-29 2014
and Week 3 September 02 - 05 2014
Introduction
I have decided to combine weeks 2 and 3 to allow the students additional time to engage with the information I have provided them so far. All assignments for week 2 and 3 are due to me no later than 05 September 2014 except for the semesters Map Project which is due 19 September 2014. The primary reason for this decision is because we had to spend a little more time issuing both the classroom journals and setting up the electronic journals and many students did not have access to their google accounts and so could not participate in many of the assignments that require this access.
The first section we study this year will last approximately 3 weeks and cover the basics of geographical terms, how to read maps and globes, distinguishing between land masses (such as continents, countries and islands), relearning or learning the 7 continents, the Earth's grid system (hemispheres, the equator, prime meridian, longitude and latitude lines), time zones and why people settle were they did (climate, resources, natural boundaries and other important considerations).
Learning how to read maps and globes is an important skill when learning about geography. Students will learn the following skills during this lesson:
Week Objectives:
-- Identify cardinal directions on a map (north, south,
east and west)
-- Identify the 7 continents and 4 major oceans in the
world
-- Identify the hemisphere in which we live in
-- List the different components of the Earth's Grid
System
-- Identify and locate the equator, prime meridian
and the four hemispheres of the Earth (north,
south, east and west)
-- Utilize longitude and latitude lines to locate
absolute locations
-- Distinguish between absolute and relative location
-- Create a map
-- Identify the five themes of geography
VOCABULARY WORDS INTRODUCED THIS WEEK:
absolute location
Absolute location is a specific location on Earth that is determined by the use of longitude and latitude lines on Earth's Grid System.
cardinal directions
The cardinal directions are the four basic directions on a map and globe (north, south, east and west)
compass rose
A diagram of a compass on a map showing the cardinal directions of north, south, east and west.
Earth's Grid System
The Earth's grid system consists of Earth's four hemispheres, the equator, the prime meridian, longitude lines, latitude lines and the cardinal directions
equator
The equator is an imaginary line running east to west and separates the Earth into the northern and southern hemispheres.
geography
The study of the Earth and its features including the distribution of life on Earth. The physical characteristics, especially the surface features of a specific area.
hemisphere
The Earth is divided into sections by both the equator and the prime meridian and each section is known as a hemisphere.
latitude
Latitude lines are imaginary lines running east to west and used in Earth's grid system to plot absolute locations.
longitude
Longitude lines are imaginary lines running north to south and used in Earth's grid system to plot absolute locations.
prime meridian
The prime meridian is an imaginary line running north and south that separates the Earth into the eastern and western hemispheres.
region
A region is an area with at least one unifying physical or human feature such as climate, land forms, population or history.
relative location
The relative location of an area is determined by the location of other landmarks nearby. For example, Pensacola is located relatively southeast of Mobile, AL or east of the Mississippi River.
