Last week we discussed in detail the Stone Age period. We talked about how there is three distinct periods that the Stone Age is broken into. First there is the Old Stone Age or the Paleolithic period. This is the beginning of mankind and covers the appearance of Homo Erectus, Homo Sapien Neandrathalus (or Neanderthal man) and Homo Sapien (us). Mankind during this period of time roamed the Earth as nomads searching for food and shelter and once food ran out they would migrate to another place where food was in abundance.
The middle Stone Age period began once mankind discovered how to create fire. There are many theories about this such as mankind accidentally striking flint on flint to create a spark to mankind witnessing lightning setting fire to a tree. Some believed that until mankind was able to make fire on his own he transported hot coals each day to restart when he camped for the evening. There is no way for us to be sure about this but it is known that mankind did eventually discover fire and used it both to keep warm and to cook with. It is also believed that during this time frame mankind first domesticates or tames wild animals. Many agree that one of the first to be tamed were wild dogs. This soon spread to the domestication of other animals and mankind becoming a herder.
Finally there is the New Stone Age or the Neolithic time period where mankind discovers the science of farming and agriculture. This is known as the Neolithic Revolution or Agriculture Revolution.
This week we will go into more detail by exploring the importance of two specific anthropologic finds. Otzi the Iceman and Lucy. These two discoveries tell us a great deal about how mankind might have lived during the Stone Age Period. Once we have completed exploring these topics we will go into detail about the Beginnings of Civilization.
