World History Unit 4 Prehistory Week 13 Detailed Lesson Plan 18 -22 November
2013
Introduction
This week we will close out our unit on Prehistory, review and take the unit test. During this unit students learned a great deal about prehistoric times and how modern day archaeologist piece together and come up with theories about how life might have been in this time of prehistory (history before the written word). They do this by studying the artifacts that these ancient people left behind. We discussed the controversy of Creationism vs. Evolution, about our ancestor’s Homo Hablis, Homo erectus, Cro-Magnon man, Neanderthal man and finally us, Homo sapiens.
We learned that man-kind was first a hunter-gatherer who never settled in one area for long but went in search of game, wild plants and fruits to eat and often would follow the herd they depended on as they moved on. Eventually mankind left Africa and his journeys led him to the rest of our plant and eventually man-kind reached South America. They were able to do this by crossing over a land bridge (Bering land bridge or Beringia) that in prehistoric times connected the continents of Asia and North America (roughly where northeast Russia and Alaska are today.
The students also learned about the three distinct periods of the Stone Age which are the Paleolithic, Mesolithic and Neolithic (old, middle and new) time periods and what specific events separates these time periods and the significant achievements of each such as the discovery of fire, domestication of animals and the discovery of agriculture.
